The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 was awarded to Harvey J. Alter, Charles M. Rice and Michael Houghton for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus.<\/p>\n

The hepatitis C virus is a small enveloped RNA virus. The virus particle consists of a lipid membrane envelope. Two viral envelope glycoproteins are embedded in the lipid envelope and take part in viral attachment and entry into the cell. Within the envelope is an icosahedral core. Inside the core is the single-stranded RNA molecule. The virus is the cause of hepatitis C liver cancer.<\/p>\n
