The Nobel Prize was awarded to William Kaelin, Peter Ratcliffe and Gregg Semenza for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. Gregg Semenza and Peter Ratcliffe studied the erythropoietin gene (EPO gene) and how it is regulated by varying oxygen levels. EPO is a hormone and stimulates red blood cell formation and thus the body’s oxygen uptake capacity.
