The accumulation of the protein beta-amyloid in the cerebral cortex is associated with Alzheimer's disease. Beta-amyloid is produced by cleavage of an amyloid precursor protein. The cleavage yields a number of peptides, ranging from 36 to 43 amino acids in length.
