Richard Hendersson, one of the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry 2017, succeeded in using an electron microscopy to generate a three-dimensional image of a protein, bacteriorhodopsin. It is a protein located in the cell membrane and acts as a light-driven proton pump in the cell.
